Who is Mister Blifil? A character in Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones (which, if you haven’t read, you should), whom various critics have called loathsome, evil, self-seeking, villainous, odious, detestable, hypocritical, greedy, repellent, slimy, and piously moralizing.

Not me exactly, but I’m working on it.

I’m retired and live near Boston. A long time ago I attended a couple of big-name universities. I don’t read as much as I should, don’t travel as much as I’d like, and don’t remember as much as I’d need for a memoir. I like movies about believable people, not explosions and twits. I don’t know one “celeb” from another. I may be a bore.

My wife still likes me, though — we were married in 1971 — and that counts for something.
